Side note: "The Manhattan Dive"

As previously mentioned, I have been wandering around Manhattan in hopes of finding a job. Today I visited a very reputable Employment Agency which yielded great results. I won't mention their information unless I receive permission from them but if you are in the New York area and would like their info, please contact me through email. Aside from that, I witnessed the most interesting (and quite bold!) coin spectacle as I crossed Lexington Ave. today. This gray suited older man was crossing the street in quite a hurry when he noticed something shiny on the ground. He stopped right in the middle of crossing and picked up the coin despite not having the right of way. He almost met his maker on that one- a yellow taxi almost hit him (by mere inches!!) . The driver popped his head out of the driver side window and flings a heap of curses his way. The man smiled and gestured accordingly- coin in tow. I'm hoping he at least got a quarter out of that one lol. Judging from the likes of his suit, I am baffled by his tenacity.

That is something I would NEVER do. A coin isn't worth risking your life. Seeeriously!

$0.95

Today we found an impressive cache of coins- 23 in total! We found $0.95 in the form of a quarter, four dimes, three nickels, and fifteen pennies- woohoo! My daughters have taken to walking around the outside of the mall (the grassy areas) and have had much luck finding spare coins. It's been a long while since we've found such a shiny new quarter (this one is from alaska | print date 2008). One of the pennies we found looks heavily eroded and quite unrecognizable. I've noticed we haven't met the dollar mark for the month of April- looks like New Yorkers are feeling the pinch!

Places where found: Two dimes at DD in Shirley, NY, three pennies in parking lot at docs office, one penny at gas station here in SI, dime number three at indoor parking lot in manhattan, dime number four and canadian penny in front of Virgil's BBQ in manhattan, dime number five right by Hello Kitty store in Times square.

It rained something fierce today. April showers bring May flowers and also, perhaps, some loose change buried underground? Stay tuned :)

$0.02 (The Aprille Foole)

HAPPY APRIL FOOL'S DAY!
and a very happy birthday to my good buddy from Bensonhurst, Michele Torres!!
I'll be sure to ask her what it feels like to turn 18 ;)

As for found change: So far I've found two pretty banged up pennies- both at the local gas station where I filled up my gas guzzler.

I'm working on planting some mild mannered april fool pranks on the girls- so far one is ready to go :)

Since the day is not over and I am feeling optimistic about our impending grocery store trip, I won't be updating the total of the day BUT I will impart a little snippet from Wikipedia regarding this strange, non-legal holiday :)

April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day, although not a holiday in its own right, is a notable day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbours, or sending them on fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. Traditionally, in some countries, the jokes only last until noon: like UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool".[1] Elsewhere, such as in Ireland, France, and the USA, the jokes last all day.

Origins: The origin of April Fools' Day is obscure. One likely theory is that the modern holiday was first celebrated soon after the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar; the term referred to someone still adhering to the Julian Calendar, which it replaced.[2] In many pre-Christian cultures May Day (May 1) was celebrated as the first day of summer, and signalled the start of the spring planting season. An April Fool was someone who did this prematurely. Another origin is that April 1 was counted the first day of the year in France. When King Charles IX changed that to January 1, some people stayed with April 1. Those who did were called "April Fools" and were taunted by their neighbors.[citation needed] In the eighteenth century the festival was often posited as going back to the times of Noah. An English newspaper article published on April 13th, 1789 said that the day had its origins when he sent the raven off too early, before the waters had receded. He did this on the first day of the Hebrew month that corresponds with April.[3] A possible reference to April Fools' Day can be seen in the Canterbury Tales (ca 1400) in the Nun's Priest's tale, a tale of two fools: Chanticleer and the fox, which took place on March 32nd.[4]

Today we found a total of $0.15 in the form of a dime and five pennies. Two of the dirty pennies were found in front of Applebees on Forest Avenue and the rest of the change was found in the parking lot of SIU Hospital. The quarters were found in the change return slot of a vending machine on campus (woohoo!) The dimes and pennies were found scattered around outside and in the mall. $5.03 (+ 5 !)

Today we found $1.23 in the form of a dollar, two dimes, and three pennies. We cashed in a total of $3.80 in bottles that we collected and had tucked away since the summer during our beautification stint. I can't believe how many bottles we found discarded on the boardwalk- 75 in total! Goodbye balcony clutter!

The +5 by the total amount on the title was today's very first find- a fake nickel!! We've added it to the non-changepot (where we currently keep the foreign coins, broken jewelry, and ripped dollar bills). The dollar we found was pretty dirty (see picture below)- so dirty that we have placed it into a ziploc snack bag and added it into the changepot.

Today we found a total of 43 cents in the form of three dimes, two nickels, and three pennies- thanks to the fine folks walking around and shopping happily at the Jersey Gardens Mall. Bri's best find of the day was the three dimes and a nickel over by the relaxation chair station (Ka-Ching!). At this rate, we'll be seeing $80.00 in no time!

Enjoy!

  • Saw your blog and congrats to you all! My daughter is 21 now, but for years
she has saved change in her closet. Cashes it in (at the bank, so there is
no fee) on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving every year. That is her
Christmas shopping money. She starts filling her bucket again on
Thanksgiving for the following year. All her shopping done, with
cash, and no after-Christmas bills! She usually gets $350-400 a
    year. ann Mansfield TX

  • Hi Barb, I was picking up pennies by the vending machines today and realized I was building up quite a collection. Some people drop quarters, nickles and dimes also.

  • Hi there - I was inspired to find your story and the subsequent blogs of others finding money. I have been looking for and finding money since august 2007 and to date have around $189 and growing. My point was to prove that a penny turns into a nickel into a dime into a quarter in a dollar and into dollars ++++++ .. I live on the west or right now wet coast of Canada and will try and work on a blog to join the group. Hope to hear from you, Cheers Suzanne

  • Hello money finders, My name is Bobby Eason. I just found your website. Congratulations on your interesting family hobby. This January, I started a blog site called MoneyWalker. My blog address is as follows: http://MoneyWalker.blogspot.com/ I would appreciate you listing my blog on your homepage of listed blogs. My goal is to use the external motivation of finding lost money as a reason to persevere in the healthy habit of walking for fitness. About half of my entries deal with physical fitness and the other half with tips for finding money while walking. My blog is an infant and I am seeking ways to improve it. Again, I really enjoy the way you are teaching great American values to your family.

  • Loved your site. I've been picking up money off the ground my entire life. About 25 years ago I started my own Christmas newsletter as a sarcastic swipe at Christmas newsletters and talked about important things like my dentist visits and the money I found. I call it "free range coinage" and started a Free Range Coinage Club and every time one of my family or friends tells me that I inspired them to pick up money I let them know they too are now in the club. Glad to see I am not alone in the world!

$0.03 (Yakima,WA pennies)

I received a letter today addressed to my daughters from my grandmother-in-law. . She is so adorable!! She'd sent us a note congratulating us on our changepot successes and sent us her own story (along with her find). It read as follows:

Hi girls-
Hope you are doing well and are happy. Tony took me to get new glasses the other day and I found these! Thought you might like to add them to your stash-

Love,
Grandma R.

The letter had three pennies taped on it! I'll add them lovingly to today's post as we've found nothing yet but we haven't given up hope. Once the snow melts I'm sure we'll find lots of corroded pennies and nickels to pick up!

$0.97

Today was a great day here at chez Changepot! We found a total of 97 cents in the form of three quarters, a dime, a nickel, and seven pennies. Two of the three quarters were found in the return slot of a soda machine on campus. The other quarter and a nickel were found in the slushy snow right in front of Dunkin Donuts. I'm beginning to think Dunkin' Donuts may be the best place to find change even in this inclement weather. The dime and pennies were found scattered all around the administration building on campus where Hubby sorted out some enrollment paperwork and the like. I miss school ::sigh::

Despite the snow, we managed to find 19 cents in the form of a dime, a nickel, and four pennies. The majority of the pennies were found right outside home depot where hubby bought a few tubes of caulk (yes, it's caulk time again!). The dime and nickel were found outside of Dunkin Donuts where hubby and the girls enjoyed some hot cocoa and watched the snowflakes get bigger at nine am :)

$5.69

WHAT A DAY!! Today we found a total of five dollars and sixty nine cents in the form of a five dollar bill, a quarter, three dimes, a nickel, and nine pennies. The five dollar bill was found at the father capodanno intersection pictured below :)

Hubby put the four ways on and stepped out to retrieve the bill. The coins were all found while shopping for sneakers at Jersey Gardens mall in New Jersey. This is the second five dollar bill found this year (the first one happened on Lincoln's Birthday). I'm still waiting on the graphics from the previous finds so please bear with me :)

WOW!! We just passed the $70.00 mark! On this date last year (leap year), we were barely at 46 dollars ($46.08 to be exact- to see last year's post, click here-->February 29, 2008) but yet we managed to find a total of $402.72. I am feeling optimistic.. let's see what the future holds

$0.68 (and Paul Mooney)

Today we found a total of $0.68 in the form of two quarters, a dime, a nickel, and three pennies- all acquired around the times square vicinity! I remember stating many times that Manhattan is a bad place to find change- not so. Tonight proved the theory wrong especially when the majority of the coins were higher denominations than the usual copper we find all around Staten Island. We were in the city today to catch comedian Paul Mooney at Caroline's on Broadway.

(source: sfist.com)

I was a little scared at first because alot of people have negative things to say about this comedian (he picks on people etc). I didn't get that impression at all! In fact, I think the man is hysterical and I'd looove to see him again! We were seated directly in front of Paul so we got to see him up close. What an incredible experience. Thanks to Scott and Mike for joining me on this comedy venture tonight!

BONUS!

During the show, we sat very close to Mr. Mooney and watched him sip on his bottled water. Mike snapped this picture and after the show we managed to grab the bottle (as they would only throw it out anyway)! Check it out!! How about that for memorabilia?!

How to remove burns and caked in grease from a frying pan

Put an inch or so of water in the pan with a drop or two of dish washing liquid. Turn on your stove and put the pan on a medium flame.Bring to a boil - the burned areas should peel off and the grease subsides as it mixes in with the soapy water. If any remains, try a second time until the pan looks good as new.

Now THAT is something I never thought of!

OFF TOPIC: CHARITIES

source: jailbreak-pan-america.com

My family and I have started researching charities on the Internet and would like some help in picking out five (5) to support by posting links on this blog and donating a portion of the found money fund towards their cause. In our first interview on Fox and Friends, I had mentioned that we'd like to donate the money when it gets to $10K. That number seems quite unrealistic because if you calculate how long it took for us to get to 1K, 10K would take approximately 27 years (and that would amount to finding approximately a dollar a day!). If any of our readers would like to suggest a charity and provide some information, please feel free to comment on this post or email us at kbunlim@gmail.com and we'll include it in our follow-up post to CHARITIES. Have a wonderful day!

Today I found three pennies while on a power walk on the South Beach boardwalk. On my way home I noticed a young woman had dropped two bills on the floor- a twenty and a ten. I called out to her and she scooped up her bills eagerly. She then explained how it wasn't even her money and she'd be in a heap of trouble if she'd lost it. I wonder how many people would actually pocket the money as opposed to doing the 'right thing'? What would you do?

OFF-TOPIC: CNN interview and responses

My family and I would like to personally thank all of the wonderful people that have taken the time out to check out the blog and share some wonderful stories about finding change (the jingling and the metaphorical kind) in their lives. Over the next few days, I will post some of the delightful and inspiring stories as I recieve them!

Here is one interesting email I received along with a cute photo of where they place found change :

I just wanted to say that it's wonderful to see someone out doing this - and blogging it! I just wanted to let you know that I started something last year called "The Karma Kart" that is along the same lines as you. I was given a small shopping cart as a gift and I started using it to hold coins that I found. Soon my brother and a couple friends just started donating what they found on the ground.

I've included a picture of my "Karma Kart" for you to see.

I just thought you'd enjoy knowing that your blog put a smile on my face - 2,800 miles away in BC, Canada! Cheers! Tony.

Thank you so much.. and please feel free to send your stories so I post them on here along with my change totals :)

Today hubby found a total of 26 cents in the form of two dimes, a nickel, and a penny. I am trying to convince him to take phone pictures of the finds prior to picking it up but he made a valid point of how difficult it would be to do that for EVERY coin found. Sometimes the pick ups have to be smooth and calculated- especially when walking in Manhattan or other crowded metropolitan areas. Today we were interviewed on Fox News Channel here in New York City about this blog. Our children had an amazing time and we got to see live television in action- wow! The change today was picked up by Clayton Morris (co-host) during a teaser segment with co-host Alisyn Camerota.
Here are a few pictures we took en route :) It was SOOO EXCITING!! In all our excitement, we forgot to mention the name of our blog lol. Hubby did a search and found multiple links under 'Family Collects $1,000 Worth of Spare Change'.

(Update! Found more change after the show! In Manhattan of all places :) Found a dime, a nickel, and nine pennies in various places. If you get a chance, check out the Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Splendor 2009! P.S.S--> While on my way to RCMH, I noticed an older gentleman bend over with great effort to pick up a penny at a crosswalk off 7th avenue. I caught myself staring because I'd never witnessed someone brave the elements (it was FREEZING) in order to pick up a lone penny! Hubby went out of his way to rescue coins in the subway, the ferry, the street, and Dunkin Donuts off Times Square but he's seasoned at that kind of swoop and recover tactic. Social Implications? README

Hubby and I were discussing the recent publicity generated by our family's odd little hobby and look upon it with mixed feelings. A large majority of people feel that picking up change found in the street is a sign of financial hardship, too much spare time, or simply put- a social faux pas.

Is it really a bad thing?

What started more as a social experiment has now become something considerable. Imagine finding a thousand dollars in the street. What would you do with it? Pay a bill? Splurge on something you'd otherwise not buy with your hard earned cash? We here at the changepot have not spent the money we've found nor intend to do so. Our children are very proud of their additions- their found coins in the playgrounds, on the sidewalk, etc. Also, we do not rush to pick up dropped coins nor bowl some old lady over to pick up her freshly dropped dollar. Quite simply- we bend over to pick up coins, bills, and broken gold jewelry already dropped. You'd be surprised how many people walk over money without a forethought. How many times have you walked over a folded dollar bill discarded carelessly in front of automated sliding doors at the supermarket? Last year alone, I found eleven dollars - a ten and a one - just by glancing ahead of me. Coins? They're everywhere. What sets the Changepot, Found Money, and other people who retrieve change aside from the local population? We document our change finds in blogs and share our joys in obtaining it. This is an important time in our lives - a new president ( I can't believe he's got a myspace profile!), a new way of thinking. Pay attention to your surroundings ladies and gentlemen. Perhaps Change is Good after all?

Wow! Today I found a dollar on the ground while walking to the grocery store. The rest of the find- nine pennies- were found in various locations. Today we took a trip around the mall and found a significant amount of change (definitely not do-able in this ourside weather). We found a total of $0.35 in the form of two dimes, a nickel, and ten pennies. The first dime was found right by the elevator in the underground parking area (great start!). Dime #2 was found under a bench in the food court. The lone nickel was spotted under a 'dippin' dots' machine as we rode the descending escalator. Pennies were coming out of the wood work today- which is A-OKAY with us.. .times aren't that hard it seems :)

REPOST: I DARE YOU

I'm so happy that people are starting to realize just how much we tend to overlook change on the ground. This blog isn't just about the change I find- it's about how you can change your situation with a little positive thinking and alot of faith. Are you ready to make a change? Leave me a message and tell me how YOU plan on changing today?

I DARE YOU

(in case link doesn't work)

1. Start picking up change you find on the floor and put it in a jug.
2. Make a budget that takes into account all the habits you have- quit them for a month and add the money into that jug.
3. Think about your future TODAY instead of tomorrow- add a dollar in the jug everytime you say something negative.
4. Be nice to your family. They are the only people you have in the long term like it or not.
5. Recycle cans and bottles at the supermarket. Put that money into the jug.
6. Sell the junk you're stashing in the basement. Take half of your proceeds and put it into the JUG.

Your jug will thank me later.

Today we found a 1967 Quarter on our way to salsa class. Hubby and I are taking dance lessons as a way to spend some fun 'alone time' together. So far we're up to shine number four in a series of over one hundred steps! Looks like it's going to be a warm winter :)

Interesting.... so far we've had a decent 3/3 streak of finding silver coins as opposed to 'just pennies'. I guess people are finding it too cold to pick up dropped change- ah well, the more the merrier :)

$0.12

Today we found a total of $0.12 today in the form of a dime and two pennies. The dime was found right by my car in the parking lot. The two pennies were found right on the ramp going up towards the second floor in Jersey Gardens. Sadly, a quarter got away from me today. I reached down into a patch of ice in the parking lot expecting the quarter to be stuck in the grey debris- not so! The quarter gave quickly underneath my grip and slid further underneath the car. It's okay because I'm sure someone out there will make better use of it than us at this point :)

Today we found a 1969 Quarter at the gym. Today marks day one for Brianna's gym regiment- I am very proud of her. A reader posted a question yesterday that I have to answer :)

Q: Wow, what you're doing is so awesome. I have a question for you: What is the dirtiest coin/piece of money that you found? And would you go great lengths to pick up a horrendously dirty penny?

A: We don't pick up money that is soiled beyond repair. The dirtiest money we found was a dollar bill that was blessed with birdpoo : the post can be found by clicking on this link --->The BirdSh*t Dollar

$0.94

A warm welcome to those who are coming over from our local news articles posted today in The Daily News and NBC New York.
My family and I are very excited to see all the attention our changepot has generated in the past three and a half years! My daughter Brianna has now decided to take over the daily accounting and posting for the changepot (a habit I highly encourage). Now back to how we got here in the first place: the totals.

On Friday we found two very cold pennies in front of our house. The weekend drill at hubby's job brought us three dimes.one nickel, and two pennies. Today my daughter found fifteen cents in the form of a dime and a nickel in the school yard and hubby found a quarter, a dime, and a nickel (in that order) while getting us three copies of the Daily news today. While we haven't found a dollar yet since the new year began, I am quite optimistic though something tells me we'll have some new competition in the change finding scene with all the new hunters turned on to the idea that yes, you can accumulate quite a bit of change if you pick up that penny. I say the more the merrier!

$2.68

Happy New Year to all! Hopefully everyone is in great health and spirits despite our economic woes! The Changepot project is still in effect and despite our lack of blog postings we are still reaping the benefits of being humble by picking up spare coins and the like. Since our last posting, we've found a total of $2.68 in the form of four quarters, nine dimes, five nickels, and fifty three pennies. Tomorrow we have a special guest coming over so i will blog all about it once we're done :)

Here are some very odd finds during FY 08 that I feel I must memorialize more for personal satisfaction rather than accountability :)

5> The Godiva Pretzel nickel: Hubby's famous words: " Are we supposed to eat this chocolate or wear it?"
4> The Christmas subway finds: God Bless the creators of Purell!!
3> The Mall sink penny: One of the cleanest pennies i've found thus far. Again, purell... merci beaucoup!
2> The Quarter that got away: While we didn't get to take this quarter, it was nice while it lasted. The quarter was right next to a chic sandal wearing hippie at a bay ridge Dunkin' Donuts. The fact that the man came out in sandals during a snowstorm was crazy enough.
1> The not now penny: Ever run into someone that you don't want to talk to and they distract you enough to make you forget what you were doing in the first place? Fortunately I ditched her and grabbed the penny by her foot and made my way outside the supermarket. Sometimes it's not that easy getting away lol.

$20.00!!

Despite the economy being in such a state, we managed to find a twenty dollar bill on the ground at a local department store! My youngest is credited for today's find as she pointed out the folded bill and asked if that was 'ping'. I am so very thankful for this rapid upswing in change finds this fiscal year- the bill pushes us up past $40.00- a first in Changepot history :)
