Today we hung out around Brooklyn all day and found some decent coinage- 68 cents in the form of two quarters, a dime and eight pennies the hard way! Today we cashed in on the brooklynite discarding of pennies near parking meters- found six pennies and one quarter that way. The rest of the change was found in the park where Kitty played for a little bit while dad and I chatted about the future.

During our outing, we stopped off at our nearby neighborhood bank to inquire about the current savings rate. I can't believe how low our rates are nowadays! 0.10% seems inconceivable!!! When will this nightmare end???

Today we found a total of twelve cents in the form of a dime and two pennies- all found by hubby on his travails to and from work. Here's a pic of today's found dime in it's found location from hubby's super cool phone. Today's dinner walk was postponed due to the high winds out here (remnants from the nor'easter). Today we found a total of $0.39 in the form of three dimes, a nickel, and four pennies. The very first find was a nickel hidden nicely amongst some freshly cut grass in my neighborhood. I was excited because it has been a while since I got back into blogging my finds and I'd forgotten how much fun it was to see the amount of change found on the ground grow from one tiny jar to another until it reaching its final home - our giant five gallon water bottle.

The family and I are going for a nice walk after dinner tomorrow night. Score! Yet another reason why I love blogging our finds: more opportunity to spend time away from the TV and Internet. Love it!!

Today we found a collective total of $0.76- all hail last nights' rainstorm!! Hubby found $0.25 in the form of a dime, two nickels, five pennies and one seeriously eroded quarter. I found a quarter on my way to work and my daughter found $0.26 in the form of a quarter and a penny on the way to school. Earlier this year, I remember finding $0.26 on two interesting occasions- both of them on days that I participated in half marathons (13.1 miles). I keep thinking 26 cents is a sign from the running gods that I should go for the gold and be part of America's 1%- more on that as I continue my trainings though.

As it once began ever so humble, the changepot is back again- a few days after it's birthday but better late than never I say :). Today seems like a peculiar calendar date indeed - 10/10/10. The fam and I went apple picking today at Alstede Farms in Chester, NJ. The place was packed but we managed to squirrel away a few apples and find some change on the ground. Kitty found a quarter in the rocky parking lot, mom found a scratched up nickel, and we found three pennies on the way back home. Life is sweet but finding change nowadays is even sweeter!

Despite us not logging our change finds in well over a year- we have found a lot of change but it wasn't documented. Instead of counting the coins from last year- we've decided to cash in the change and donate it outright to a charity run coming up next month. Details on that will soon follow! :) But for right now, we begin our tale again with a humble report- $0.33 on this warm, Indian Summer day!

It has been a very long time since we've posted on here- lots of things going on here at the Changepot. I've been throwing all our found change in the 'mini-pot' including the counted and uncounted coins so in the interest of record-keeping i'm resetting the pot to zero and will tally up the totals today. This morning during my 5 mile run I found twenty five cents the hard way (two dimes, five pennies) in one parking space close to my jogging route. We're off to run our errands for the day- starting off our 2010 change count at $0.25 found and a TBD total from October 9, 2009!

Happy 4th Birthday Changepot!!

Happy Belated birthday to our little pot- who is as of today approximately 150 dollars richer (number to be determined tomorrow at TD Bank- tune in for details). Though we haven't had much luck this year, the journey is all the more sweeter knowing we've opened America's eyes to being a bit more frugal by enjoying long walks with family, finding coins and putting them away to donate to charity.

Change of Pace

Hope everyone is well and in good spirits!

While we have been finding money on a daily basis, we haven't had much opportunity to report it . During the summer, Hubby and I started running in charity 5Ks and donating to charitable causes out of pocket. We are currently training ourselves to run beter, more efficient 5Ks and 10ks.

I've decided on running a total of 70 races in honor of my dad's age. He is Stage IV and instead of letting cancer get the best of me and my family, I've decided to turn this into something positive by raising what I can to help fight for a cure and bring awareness to those who think cancer is 'some other family's problem'. My pledge is to do what I can to help - and if just one person benefits from my determination then I've succeeded.

Join me in getting up off the couch and becoming proactive for a worthy cause. You'll be glad you did!


P.S. I will definitely post the progess in change finding later on today. Right now we're on our way to the anime convention at Jacob Javits. Ciao for now!

The long overdue ketchup post!

Hello to all Changepot readers and change hunting enthusiasts alike! We've been on a fairly long hiatus from the internet for two big reasons:

1. We've moved out of Staten Island!

2. We've become a bit more physically proactive!

We've found a sizable amount of coins in the past month including some notable finds:

a 1963 Franklin Silver half dollar, alot of wheat pennies, two ten dollar bills, a dollar bill, and a lucky vegas chip!

Right now we are in the process of counting all the change tonight. Once that is done, i'll update the totals accordingly and upload some photos of the finds. Thanks for your patience and tomorrow i'll post accordingly if we find anything :)

Update!!

What a hectic month! We've been pretty busy here but it hasn't stopped the coin findings! While we haven't found ANY dollar bills in the past month, we have encountered a few rarities (a silver Franklin half dollar in the street while on a morning run), and some other nice coins i've yet to account for. Hopefully later on today I'll get a chance to count all the coins and update the totals accordingly.

Pennies have been the choice find lately especially after the petit rain showers that have plagued our area in the past few days. This weekend we'll be combing the Jersey shore for some fun, fireworks, and loose coins :) Our changepot is starting to get a little heavy with all the penny finds lately!

Today we found a total of $0.60 in the form of a quarter (wow two days in a row!), three dimes, and five pennies. One penny looks partially corroded but it still counts in our eyes :). Today we attended a luncheon in honor of my husband. He received some very nice parting gifts from his former unit- two engraved sports hats and I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers for helping out throughout the years. I'll always have a special spot in my heart for the ARCD Region 1 because so many great things have happened- the birth of my daughter, the strengthening of our family unit, and the overall feeling of helping soldiers and their families out during times of duress. I wish only the best and continued success for them and look forward to helping them in the future regardless.

The majority of this change was found during our small trip south(the first of many I hope!). We here at the changepot have officially kicked off summer vacation last Friday so hopefully we'll find more change during our family outings and such. Since our last update on this blog we've found a whole lot of change, taken many pictures but haven't had the chance to sit down and document it all! We've found a total of 43 coins, two foreign pennies (Canadian) and two extremely corroded pennies that most likely won't be accepted by the bank when we go change our yearly coin total into dollar bills. I did happen to find a penny at the gym this morning but I've yet to take it out of my gym bag and since the day is young, I won't update the find until later tonight :)

Wow!

Since the last update, we found a total of $2.55 the hard way.. five quarters, seven dimes, four nickels, and forty pennies!! Most of it was found today in the oddest of places- lots of dimes at the mall, three quarters in a row at the supermarket parking lot, fairly moldy nickels and pennies in the dirt by the playground... it looks like people are venturing out and dropping change again!! Perhaps this is an omen of better change finding days ahead :)

Side note: As we headed over to check on my dad, my daughter spotted a penny stuck in tar. She brought up the idea of going back to the location to try to pry it out then my husband admitted to getting out of his vehicle once before while stuck at a traffic light to pick up the very same coin! The looks he got when he tried to pick up a very secured coin were pretty bad indeed. Imagine that!

Despite having gone out for less than three hours, the crew and I managed to find a total of $2.89 by way of two crumpled up dollar bills, two quarters, three dimes, a nickel, and four pennies!! The two dollars were found under a park bench by our youngest- she'd sat down to tie her shoe and noticed the money stuck in some stray weeds. The rest of the change was found at the park, over by the mall, and one special dime was found by my daughter's best friend Valentina (who is willing to go change hunting with us from now on).

In the past two days, we've found a total of 28 cents- one dime, two nickels, and eight pennies- not enough for a postal stamp but good enough to report happily :). We also found a Bermuda dime but it won't count toward the changepot funds- it's going right into the foreign coin jar!

After Wednesday's reflection on how much we've found so far, I'm guessing we're going to have a low end fiscal year. Some of my friends blame the decrease in money littering on Obama's hand in the economy but I think people are just getting a tad bit smarter with their funds. I can't say I blame them- heck I'm willing to wager that we'll still find at least a penny a day even under the harshest conditions.

In the past few days we found a total of $1.49 in the form of a dollar bill, a quarter, two dimes, two nickels, and four pennies. We found the dime, the nickels, and three pennies while watching the Memorial Day Parade on Monday. The dollar bill and quarter were found on Tuesday (my dad's birthday) as we bought the last minute items for his petit fete :). Nothing was found on Wednesday and today I found a dime in the parking elevator while purchasing items for our very special fruit salad :). I forgot just how wonderful fruit salad can be on off days!

Times have been pretty tough and we've had unfortunate news about a loved one so the family has been preoccupied as of late. I did hear some great news today about a find that doesn't count toward changepot but it's interesting nonetheless. Today my mom was throwing out the trash and found a neatly folded twenty dollar bill right by the garbage can! She informed me that she has also created her own changepot and it now has the newly found twenty, a dollar bill, a dime, and three pennies- all in less than a year! Side note: "The Manhattan Dive"

As previously mentioned, I have been wandering around Manhattan in hopes of finding a job. Today I visited a very reputable Employment Agency which yielded great results. I won't mention their information unless I receive permission from them but if you are in the New York area and would like their info, please contact me through email. Aside from that, I witnessed the most interesting (and quite bold!) coin spectacle as I crossed Lexington Ave. today. This gray suited older man was crossing the street in quite a hurry when he noticed something shiny on the ground. He stopped right in the middle of crossing and picked up the coin despite not having the right of way. He almost met his maker on that one- a yellow taxi almost hit him (by mere inches!!) . The driver popped his head out of the driver side window and flings a heap of curses his way. The man smiled and gestured accordingly- coin in tow. I'm hoping he at least got a quarter out of that one lol. Judging from the likes of his suit, I am baffled by his tenacity.

That is something I would NEVER do. A coin isn't worth risking your life. Seeeriously!

Today we found an impressive cache of coins- 23 in total! We found $0.95 in the form of a quarter, four dimes, three nickels, and fifteen pennies- woohoo! My daughters have taken to walking around the outside of the mall (the grassy areas) and have had much luck finding spare coins. It's been a long while since we've found such a shiny new quarter (this one is from alaska | print date 2008). One of the pennies we found looks heavily eroded and quite unrecognizable. I've noticed we haven't met the dollar mark for the month of April- looks like New Yorkers are feeling the pinch!

Right now we're in the process of updating our home theatre system to promote more at-home entertainment for the colder days until spring weather sets in.

Today we found $1.23 in the form of a dollar, two dimes, and three pennies. We cashed in a total of $3.80 in bottles that we collected and had tucked away since the summer during our beautification stint. I can't believe how many bottles we found discarded on the boardwalk- 75 in total! Goodbye balcony clutter!

The +5 by the total amount on the title was today's very first find- a fake nickel!! We've added it to the non-changepot (where we currently keep the foreign coins, broken jewelry, and ripped dollar bills). The dollar we found was pretty dirty (see picture below)- so dirty that we have placed it into a ziploc snack bag and added it into the changepot.

WHAT A DAY!! Today we found a total of five dollars and sixty nine cents in the form of a five dollar bill, a quarter, three dimes, a nickel, and nine pennies. The five dollar bill was found at the father capodanno intersection pictured below :)



Hubby put the four ways on and stepped out to retrieve the bill. The coins were all found while shopping for sneakers at Jersey Gardens mall in New Jersey. This is the second five dollar bill found this year (the first one happened on Lincoln's Birthday). I'm still waiting on the graphics from the previous finds so please bear with me :)

WOW!! We just passed the $70.00 mark! On this date last year (leap year), we were barely at 46 dollars ($46.08 to be exact- to see last year's post, click here-->February 29, 2008) but yet we managed to find a total of $402.72. I am feeling optimistic.. let's see what the future holds

I remember stating many times that Manhattan is a bad place to find change- not so. We were in the city today to catch comedian Paul Mooney at Caroline's on Broadway.

In fact, I think the man is hysterical and I'd looove to see him again! We were seated directly in front of Paul so we got to see him up close. What an incredible experience. How to remove burns and caked in grease from a frying pan


Put an inch or so of water in the pan with a drop or two of dish washing liquid. Turn on your stove and put the pan on a medium flame.Bring to a boil - the burned areas should peel off and the grease subsides as it mixes in with the soapy water. If any remains, try a second time until the pan looks good as new.

Now THAT is something I never thought of!

Found a total of 57 cents during this past weekend- five dimes and seven pennies to be exact. The weather is getting better so we're seeing more change on the ground- let's see what comes our way in the next couple of days!

Today I found one lone penny in the Stop N Shop parking lot. I haven't had much time to update all the activites surrounding the changepot- that will change this coming week. My family and I are reviewing the submitted charities and will post the entry CHARITES part II this coming week.

Today we found two very special units of currency in honor of Abraham Lincoln's birthday!! I found a five dollar bill, and a penny- both in the same parking lot . OFF TOPIC: CHARITIES

My family and I have started researching charities on the Internet and would like some help in picking out five (5) to support by posting links on this blog and donating a portion of the found money fund towards their cause. In our first interview on Fox and Friends, I had mentioned that we'd like to donate the money when it gets to $10K. That number seems quite unrealistic because if you calculate how long it took for us to get to 1K, 10K would take approximately 27 years (and that would amount to finding approximately a dollar a day!). Today I found three pennies while on a power walk on the South Beach boardwalk. On my way home I noticed a young woman had dropped two bills on the floor- a twenty and a ten. I called out to her and she scooped up her bills eagerly. She then explained how it wasn't even her money and she'd be in a heap of trouble if she'd lost it. I wonder how many people would actually pocket the money as opposed to doing the 'right thing'? What would you do?

Found a total of 16 cents- a dime and six pennies- while on our errand runs. Not much else to report BUT here is a photo of the only 'silver' found today :)



This dime was found on the floor in a target parking lot about two hours ago. Life is good! :)

Today we found a total of nineteen cents- a dime, a nickel, and four pennies. The nickel and a few of the pennies were found while being interviewed by NBC's Fashion and lifestyle reporter extraordinaire Cat Greenleaf!

Also: Found a 1953 Canadian cent- an absolute rarity much like an american 'wheat penny'. I'll have to check on the value at some point.

Found a total of 11 cents- a nickel and six pennies- during our random trips to the store and Dunkin' Donuts. Here is a picture of the last penny we found :) Happy Sunday everyone!

Found 8 cents so far in the form of a nickel and three pennies- all before noon! I have enclosed a picture of one of the finds in its natural habitat. Notice how well the penny hides in the wild? Also included is a pic of my babes on location at the CNN interview accompanied by Karen's BFF Alyssa (the inseparable buddies).





UPDATE: Went with the clan over to the mall and found a few coins here and there. Here is one pic taken 'on location' lol
